Preeti is a Nepali font designed by Ajay Mishra in 1993 for the traditional Remington keyboard layout — the standard for Nepali typing in offices, schools, and print shops across Nepal for over three decades. It maps Latin character codes to Nepali glyphs, which is why Preeti text typed on a QWERTY keyboard produces Devanagari letters when the font is installed.
Because Preeti relies on the font file being present on the reader's machine, it doesn't work on the modern web or on mobile devices. Nepal's government has been transitioning to Unicode since 2015, but Preeti remains in daily use for legal documents, older records, and any workflow that predates Unicode adoption.

Preeti stores Nepali text as Latin character codes reinterpreted by the font file. Unicode assigns each Nepali character a fixed numeric code that renders identically everywhere.
